An Education

This delightful coming-of-age story, set in soon-to-be-swinging 60s London, is based around author Lynn Barber’s memoirs, as adapted by Nick Hornby. While our 16-year-old heroine is swept off her feet by a raffish middle-class cad, the screenplay makes deft and sometimes damning observations about life in post-war Britain. It’s all rendered with a witty, literate script, spot-on characterisation and an outsider’s directorial eye for the dottiness of English life. Irresistible stuff!
