BARRY LYNDON
An Irish rogue (O’Neal) wins the heart of a rich widow (Berenson) and, reinvented as aristocrat Barry Lyndon he assumes her late husband’s position in 18th-century England, dissipates her fortune and makes a dangerous and vengeful enemy. This adaptation of Thackeray’s 1844 novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon is a masterclass in cinematography: Kubrick and cinematographer John Alcott sought to avoid using electric lighting, and for the many interior scenes this meant using candlelight – a difficult feat facilitated by superfast 50mm Zeiss lenses developed for Nasa’s Apollo moon landings.
