L’ECLISSE

In the suburbs of Rome Vittoria, a translator, breaks her engagement with her boyfriend, the writer Ricardo. Vittoria goes downtown to meet her mother, who is addicted to the stock market, and she meets the broker Piero. The final film in Antonioni's trilogy of alienation starring his muse Monica Vitti, L'eclisse is a quintessentially modernist film which shows the viewer a world where people are not really different from things, uninflected by passion, desire, hope. Beauty has no meaning, only a transactional value determined by a fickle market.
