Set during the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I, Naji Abu Nowar’s debut feature follows the movements of young Bedouin boy Theeb. In the wake of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire, Theeb’s coming-of-age is hastened by the arrival of a British officer, who he must guide to a secret destination across the unforgiving Wadi Rum desert. Theeb’s struggle to survive, microcosmic of a nation in turmoil, is beautifully rendered in this Arabic feature.
