Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque)
directed by:
Joann Sfar
with:
Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta, Doug Jones

A portrait of the French singer Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991) and the feature debut of writer-director Joann Sfar, a comic-strip designer who, like Gainsbourg, was born in France of Jewish parents. This biopic shows how after the war Gainsbourg (played by Eric Elmosnino) became the charismatic, chain-smoking, heavy-drinking Serge –composer, performer and lover of Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin.

This enjoyable, handsomely designed, somewhat ragged film brings us close to Gainsbourg as a personality. - Philip French, The Observer
