PFS AGM MINUTES
Minutes of the
of Penwith Film Society held on
Committee members present – Steve Payne (Chairman), Sally Allen (Memberships)
Apologies – Andrea Airlie, Nick Harpley
No Apologies – George Martin, Gilla Evans, Lucy Frears, Joe Spry
Chairman’s address -
The Chairman thanked all who turned up, especially those who continue to support the Society, even after the inevitable price rise – it was particularly unfortunate that Merlin chose to increase its admission prices at the same time. Apologies were expressed for the two recent no-shows of Everlasting Moments and Just Another Love Story – there are no plans to re-screen either of these as they did at least have Monday screenings in Penzance – it is not satisfactory, but the Society needs to move on if it is to deal with the latest releases. Merlin’s management are aware of the frustration this causes our members and are doing everything in their power to minimise such disruptions in the future. Previous no shows were caused by the courier, on this occasion the fault was with the distributor’s office. It has happened before and is likely to happen again. PFS unfortunately has no control over this. The newly revamped web-site was recommended, with its facilities for discussing films, leaving comments and suggestions for future programmes. The programme notes are available on line as are links to previews and reviews. Members can also learn of any last minute news like unfortunate cancellations and find information about other activities, like the PFS Christmas Party, which this year will follow on from the Sunday screening of Looking For Eric. Any suggestions for future films please contact us via web site e-mail or letter-box in foyer. Again, thanks to the committee and Merlin for their support.
TREASURER’S REPORT
As of Nov 5th the society’s balance was £1,706.38, which was slightly down on last year but the underlying situation was comfortable. PFS will not be maintaining Special Screenings as they were so poorly supported and were losing money – only 32 people attended The 400 Blows, which meant a £100 loss. PFS will try to save money in other areas e.g. posters, which will no longer be produced, as they cost approximately £70 per season. Members were advised to use local press/web site for film details.
MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Current membership is 170, a disappointing drop from the 252 with which we finished last season. Lapsed members were urged to re-new; existing members to recruit amongst friends etc.
ELECTION OF COMMITTEE
The current committee consists of -
Steve Payne – Chairman and Programme notes / Andrea Airlie – Treasurer & Savoy liaison / Sally Allen – Membership Secretary / Gilla Evans – Secretary / Nick Harpley – publicity and IT/web site / George Martin – logistics / Lucy Frears – St Ives liaison / Joe Spry
As all had indicated their willingness to serve for another year, and there were no objections or nominations from the floor, this group was returned as the acting committee for 09/10.
AOB
A request from the audience for a summer programme was noted and will be passed on to Merlin.
There being no other business the meeting concluded at 1830 with a screening of 35 Shots of Rum.
