Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Claire Denis (Beau Travail, L’intrus and 35 Shots of Rum), White Material is set in an anonymous French-speaking African country. It features Isabelle Huppert as Maria, a divorced woman trying to run a coffee plantation while her son spends his days in bed. Her father-in-law is sick and her ex-husband keeps telling her that she should return home. Civil war has broken out, and the family is in imminent danger.

Nominated, Golden Lion - Venice Film Festival 2009
White Material does not behave like a "thriller", nor like the traditional hand-wringing, breast-beating movie about Africa, and yet it as lapel-graspingly urgent as either, a movie that remains in the mind long after it has finished. (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian)
